Which Onion?

With Christmas just a week away and then New Years a week later, many of us tend to do more cooking for family and friends. Onions are a staple in most everyone’s kitchen and are called for in a myriad of recipes for soups, salads, stews or as a seasoning for cooked veggies. With so many choices how do you know which onion to use for which dish?

We’ve got a chart for you to help you decide which onion will be the best in any dish that calls for onion whether fresh or cooked:

So there you have it, now you’ll know which onion to use when. Cooking for family and friends is a gift in and of itself and is an expression of hospitality and warmth to those we love. If you are cooking this holiday season remember to leave out the stress and worry. Those are two ingredients that can make any dish taste sour. Just add lots of patience (mostly with yourself) and a good dose of laughter… and voila! Anything you make will taste extra specially good because there is a heaping spoonful of joy in it. Joy makes everything (and everyone) better.

Happy holidays and happy cooking!

Thank you for the chart. It will be very useful. I am making a buffalo stew for our “Little House on the Prairie” themed Christmas and don’t want to overpower the meat. Think stringing popcorn and cranberry garlands, making our own butter, gingerbread cookies on the tree, and lots of laughter and fun. Have a merry Christmas.
