Trooping The Colour

Every June, Britain celebrates the birthday of the monarch, in a parade and event known as Trooping The Colour, just as they have done for the past 260 years.  More than 200 horses and 1, 400 soldiers made their way around the Mall in this grand celebration.Though the Queen’s actual birthday is April 21, the weather is not so kind in London in April and no one wants to stand and watch, let alone ride in a parade, in the rain.  So June has been designated as the month to celebrate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday.  And this past Saturday, her family was there to honor and celebrate her 92nd birthday as well.

It is a spectacular event. NO ONE does pomp and ceremony like the British.  After all, they invented the idea.

The Queen was looking well and lovely in her blue suit.  In years gone by, she was herself on horseback as are the Royal Guard, but in more recent years she has chosen to ride in a carriage.  This year her beloved husband, Prince Phillip, was not by her side, or on horseback, as he recently had hip surgery and was recovering.  He also retired this past year from his Royal duties, as he said he felt after 70 years of service he had “done his bit”.

Following the Queen’s carriage, on horseback, were Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and the two future Kings, Prince Charles and Prince William.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, rode in a carriage behind the Queen’s carriage as well.  Harry did not ride on horseback with his aunt and uncle and father and brother because, though he has served in the military, he is a Captain in the Royal Army.  A member of the British Royal family must hold the rank of Colonel, in order to ride on horseback in this event.  But we think he looks quite happy in the carriage with his parade companion.

Prince Charles’ wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, and Prince William’s wife, Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, rode in a carriage together looking lovely in pale blue.

After the parade the royal family gathered on the balcony at Buckingham Palace to watch the fly over by the RAF.

Everyone was delighted,

most especially Princess Charlotte, Prince George, and cousin Savannah Phillips, granddaughter of Princess Anne.

We join Britain is wishing Her Majesty a very happy and healthy 92nd birthday!
