Sweet Kitties

Today we have some yummy and cute kitties that just happen to be very edible and fun to make!  These are baked donuts and if you have little ones around they make an easy and fun project for you to do together.  you can buy donut pans here.

This recipe came from KingArthurFlour.com:

Baked Donuts

1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) butter
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 to 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg, to taste
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 2/3 cups King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
1 cup milk

Preheat the oven to 425°F. Lightly grease two standard doughnut pans.
In a medium-sized mixing bowl, beat together the butter, vegetable oil, and sugars until smooth.
Add the eggs, beating to combine.
Stir in the baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg, salt, and vanilla.
Stir the flour into the butter mixture alternately with the milk, beginning and ending with the flour and making sure everything is thoroughly combined.
Spoon the batter into the lightly greased doughnut pans, filling the wells to about 1/4″ shy of the rim.
Bake the doughnuts for 10 minutes. Remove them from the oven, and wait 5 to 7 minutes before turning them out of the pans onto a rack.

For these kitty donuts, we used a vanilla glaze.

Donut Glaze

1 1/4 cups confectioners’ sugar or glazing sugar, sifted to remove any lumps
1 tablespoon melted butter
1 to 2 tablespoons milk or water
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

For kitty donuts place 2 almonds on top side of the donut to make the littles “ears”.  Dip baked donuts into the glaze and allow the glaze to set up.

Using dark colored icing in an icing bag with a very small round tip, make the face and “paws” of the kitty as seen in the photo.  If you desire, use a Fruit Loop and dip it in the glaze and then in rainbow sprinkles to simulate a tiny donut. This can be placed on your baked donut to make it appear that you “kitty” is holding a donut as well.

Good food and good fun make for love, joy and abundant living!
