Remembrance Day

Ever wonder why Veteran’s Day is on November 11th and does not change?

World War 1 ended in the 11th month on the 11th day at the 11th hour!  Certainly cause for celebration!

(This is taken from an anonymous writer):  “Today I saw a man selling poppies stop a lady and he asked if he could re-position her poppy.

While doing so he told that lady she should wear the poppy on the right side;  the red represents the blood of all those who gave their lives, the black represents the mourning of those who didn’t have their loved ones return home, and the green leaf represents the grass and crops growing and future prosperity after the war destroyed so much.  The leaf should be positioned at 11 o’clock to represent the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, the time that World War 1 formally ended.  He explained to the lady that he was worried that younger generations wouldn’t understand this and his generation wouldn’t be around for much longer to teach them.

Next time you see a veteran, please take the time to thank him for his service.

Thank you for this lesson about the poppies. I never knew why we wear them. I don’t see many people wearing poppies on Veteran’s Day sny more. We did when I was a kid.
Is this picture of Flanders Field?

Yes, although we did not actually take the photograph ourselves, we believe that it is one of Flanders Fields. And, we must add that another reader pointed out that the poppy should be worn on the left side (right as you are looking at it) over the heart as the Royals are seen doing.

  2. I always thought the poppy is to be worn on the left side, over the heart, as the Royal Family does

You know, we are thinking the exact same thing. Thank you so much for pointing that out.
