Did You Know? -Maundy Thursday

Good Friday, we know. And Easter most certainly. But what is Maundy Thursday?

Maundy Thursday is the Thursday before Easter, believed to be the day when Jesus celebrated his final Passover with His disciples. Most notably, that Passover meal was when Jesus washed the feet of His disciples in an extraordinary display of humility. He then commanded them to do the same for each other.

Christ’s “mandate” is commemorated on Maundy Thursday—“maundy” being a shortened form of mandatum (Latin), which means “command.”  It was on the Thursday of Christ’s final week before being crucified and resurrected that He said this commandment to His disciples. Jesus and his disciples had just shared what was known as the Last Supper and he was washing their feet when he stated:

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another” (John 13:34).

And now you know whet this day is about for Christians. Thank you Christianity.com for that helpful explanation.

We sometimes commonly think of acting as a servant, of serving someone else as being beneath us, possibly even humiliating, or at least being less than important enough for us to do. Yet Jesus not only spoke often of loving and serving others, he demonstrated it and led by example to his disciples when he, the master, teacher, rabbi, messiah, humbled Himself to serve them and wash their feet.

Maybe today there will be a chance for you to show love to someone by serving them in a way they might never expect but that could communicate your love for them. As Christ reminded us, when you serve others, it is as if you are serving Him. Demonstrate some love today and the world, or at least your little corner of it, will be a better place.

Thank you for this post reminding us to love & serve others showing or love for Him. You have helped my thinking today. I’ll try to remember daily. I love reading your “two chums” because I think of dear Sally Tingley. She was my sister in law & still greatly missed. She thought the world of both of you.♥️
