What is VE Day?

VE Day is otherwise known as “Victory in Europe Day” and commemorates the day towards the end of the Second World War when fighting against Nazi Germany in Europe came to an end. This took place 75 years ago today and was cause for great rejoicing.

Europe had experienced a horrible war – a devastating time.

The Queen is going to make a rare speech this evening to commemorate the occasion. We feel sure that the time is emblazoned in her memory and she knows, first hand, what the end of it meant.

The address is scheduled to occur on Friday 8 May, taking place at 9pm (Greenwich Mean Time) in the evening – the exact time her father, King George VI, made his radio address to the nation in 1945 to announce victory in Europe after what he called “nearly six years of suffering and peril”. We are sure that you will be able to tune in on the television at many points during the day today to see the speech and other celebrations that are taking place in Europe.

Although many of our readers are probably not that familiar with World War II, there are a lot of us whose fathers or grand fathers fought in it. The world, we believe, would have looked very different if they had not put up a fight – a fight for right!

With so much gratitude,
