First Big Book of Why!

For Christmas, one of our granddaughters, Arabella, got a book called First of Book of Why.

She suggested that she should find a few interesting things in that book that we could share with you. So, of course, we agreed.

Why do fireflies glow?

Fireflies come out on summer nights and light up their bottoms as a way to locate each other. Here’s how it works: As he flies, a male firefly switches on and off like a tiny flashlight, hoping that a female will be attracted to him. If a female likes his flashing pattern, she’ll flash back.

Each species of firefly has a unique flashing pattern that attracts only its own kind. Firefly glows can be yellow, green, orange, or even blue!

Why does music make me want to dance?

When we hear music, it has a powerful effect on our brain and our emotions. A tune with a fast, strong rhythm switches on the part of your brain that helps you move. You might want to wiggle your toes and jiggle your hips! And guess what? Listening and dancing to music causes your brain to release chemicals that make you feel support happy!

Why does Jell-O jiggle?

The key ingredients in Jell-O are gelatin and water. Gelatin is made of tiny particles that cling tightly together in a spiral. When you add hot water, they come apart. When you pop the Jell-O in the refrigerator, the tiny particles try to link together again. They form a web that stretches from one side of the Jell-O to the other. Water gets trapped in the web’s spaces, giving the Jell-O its jiggle.

Why do some rocks have crystals inside?

Some rocks have empty spaces inside. One reason for this is that an air bubble can get trapped in lava as it cools into rock. Over time, minerals in water seep through the rock into the hollow space. The minerals cling to the insides of the rock, forming tiny crystals. When this happens over and over again for millions of years, the crystals grow. These crystal-filled rocks are known as geodes.

So much fun to share these fun facts with you all. If you are interested in this wonderful book, you can find it here:

All of your grandchildren need it!

With love from your Two Chums, who are doting grandmothers as well!
