Eureka!

What a word! But did you know this about it?

From the Greek for “I found it,” “Eureka” has been on the state seal of California since 1849.

Although the exact reason why this was chosen is not known, most suspect it refers to gold.

Gold was found in California in 1848, just one year before the phrase was adopted. According to legend, Greek mathematician Archimedes exclaimed the phrase in his bath when realizing you could use displacement to determine the weight and purity of a material.

“Eureka” became the official state motto in 1963.

Use it well and often!
