Well Done! – Bald For Good

1016875_10152079902279062_2095693899_n We hear stories all the time about celebrities or teenagers who shave their heads.  They choose baldness to get attention or as the result of a prank or a dare.  This is a different story…the story of going Bald for Good 🙂
It was reported last week that former President George Herbert Walker Bush shaved his head.  Upon learning that the 2 year old child of one of his secret service staff was fighting leukemia and had lost his hair, many of his staff shaved their heads, and the former President, in a show of support, did the same.

In a time where there seems to be so much “bad news” and scandalous reports of public figures, this touched us deeply.  This story matters for a number of reasons.  Firstly, it reminds us that no matter what your age you can be an encouragement to someone who is struggling…you are never too old to matter.

Secondly, it is a such a great example of someone using their celebrity or fame for good….not just to bring attention to themselves but to help with a cause that they see as worthy.

Lastly, what an example of true “community” this represents.  The former president, on seeing that others on his staff were aware and concerned about the child of another member of that team, jumped right in to be one of them and stand together.

President and Mrs. Bush lost their daughter, Robin, sixty years ago to leukemia when she was 3 years old.  This is a very personal story for them.  How wonderful that they can be a help and support, even all these many years later, to another family facing similar challenges.  Nothing can level any of us like the trauma of a sick child.  President and Mrs. Bush’s  support no doubt has been huge to little Patrick’s family.  So we can’t help but say “Well Done…Well Done Mr. President!”
