Not Someday – Today

My granddaughter, Savannah recently completed 2nd grade.  Shortly before the end of school there was an open house for parents and grandparents to visit the classroom and see all the amazing things the children had done and learned over the year.  There were so many wonderful projects and reports and so much art work filling the walls everywhere you could look.  These children had clearly had a full and exciting year.  But one thing in particular caught my attention.  It was a wall with the words at the top “SOMEDAY I WILL…”.  Each child had written a list of things they hoped to do someday.  Obviously, some were more ambitious than others.  Savannah’s made me smile 🙂

Some children had high hopes and big dreams for what they would do “someday”.  This is entirely appropriate for second graders to be planing and hoping and dreaming about what they might accomplish someday.  But it also got me thinking.  It has been many, many years since I was in the second grade.  I wondered what I might have written back then.  I wondered if I might have actually accomplished any of the things I would have put on that list.  And it struck me just how often I still catch myself saying “Someday I will….”.

Our hopes and dreams are important.  They keep us going sometimes during the rough spots of our lives.  But if we aren’t careful and truly deliberate in making plans and setting goals, we may come to the end of our lives with nothing more than a whole lot of hopes and dreams that were never fulfilled.  Not because they were too outlandish or impossible, but because we never made the necessary plans and took the necessary actions and had the faith to make them happen.  Since childhood one of my favorite Bible verses has been Luke 1:37:

Luke 1-37
What are you hoping for and dreaming about doing?  Are you taking steps to get there and do you have faith that it can happen?  Seeing dreams come about does wonders for the spirit and the soul.  Not just yours, but everyone else who knows what your dream has been.  It reminds and encourages them that their hopes and dreams can be accomplished too.  Whether you are in second grade, or the second half of your life, you are never too young or too old to realize the dreams God has given you.

So start today and make some plans, set some goals, and take the necessary steps to accomplish those things you are holding in your heart.  Remember, there are 7 days in the week, but “SOMEDAY” isn’t one of them.
