Dear Chums…….Is Bread OK To Eat?

DEAR CHUMSIn an effort to respond to the questions we receive from time to time we will be doing a regular “Dear Chums” post.  We would welcome any questions you might have regarding etiquette or any subject that deals with making our lives more abundant.  This is a letter we received just the other day:

“Dear Chums,

There was a recent study by the Environmental Working Group that said a large number of food products including sliced bread contain the same ingredient, (a type of rubber), used in yoga mats!”

“It makes me wary of buying any kind of processed foods but our little girl does enjoy the odd sandwich. Do the chums have a healthy, simple, sandwich bread recipe? A gluten-free one would be awesome but not essential and we do own a bread maker. Once again, it needs to be on the easy, fool-proof side!

Thank you Chums for your help,

A concerned mother”

Dear concerned mother,

We too have heard in the news about this and, yes, it seems to be true!  Apparently, in baking their bread, an additive, azodicarbonamide (known as ADA), which is used in yoga mats and some shoe rubber, is used by different companies.  Subway was, in fact, the first one to be named and has since stopped using this additive but there are other bread companies that are still using it.

According to a 1999 World Health Organization evaluation of studies on the effect of azodicarbonamide, there was a negligible impact from the chemical in animal test subjects, except in massive doses.  All information regarding human testing was inconclusive.  The ingredient is widely used throughout the food industry, including by Starbucks, McDonald’s, Burger King, Dunkin’ Donuts, and many other chains.

So, in view of these findings, why not try this simple bread recipe?  We feel sure you will find it easy and love the taste!  And for a really easy gluten free bread recipe, we will have one in our post tomorrow.  Check back with us then.   And remember to keep the questions coming.  We’ll share our best answers with you, and you, our chums,  can feel free to comment as well.   Together we will have more love, more joy and more abundant living!

I’m concerned about eating any white starches like white bread, rice, potatoes. They produce a LOT of sugar which isn’t what my body needs right now. So can I eat bread that has wheat or rye or a brown bread and keep my sugar levels low?

To my understanding Dick, all types of bread are high in carbohydrates which turn to sugars in the body. If you are needing to avoid sugar you probably want to stay away from bread as much as possible. If you are eating it though from time to time, a multigrain or whole grain bread is at least a more complex carbohydrate that will provide fiber and will turn to sugar more slowly so as not to spike your blood sugar levels. Also be sure and check the labels of bread for ingredients and I would avoid those made with high fructose corn syrup…..just my opinion but there seems to be more and more evidence to support the fact that it isn’t good for us. Thanks for asking and for always being such a faithful follower of Two Chums 🙂

Thank you for this reply, Robin. The problem is that in tomorrow’s post (which is today) you make the most tantalizing loaf of Irish soda bread. How does a boy resist such delicious goodness. The picture alone makes me drool!!
Thanks again for your advice. Now it’s off to the gym!!
