Laughter – The Very Best Medicine

Of all the things we have shared over the years, the thing that has probably bound us so  close together as “Chums” is our laughter.  It is why of all the thousands of photos over the last 25+ years we had to choose from , the one we chose to put on this website is a photo of the two of us laughing with each other…the one you see here in the right hand column. There have been ups and downs, and good days and bad, and tears as well as joy, but what most signifies our friendship is the laughter.  It is so under rated as a tonic for anything, physical or emotional, that ails you.  Whether it is something as minor as a missed parking spot or as serious as the death of a loved one, an illness or some depression that has grabbed a hold of you unexpectedly, finding humor during any given day will surely make it better.

Don’t just take our word for it…here are a lot of other folks who agree and have had something to say about the subject of laughter:

Close friends contribute to our personal growth. They also contribute to our personal pleasure, making the music sound sweeter, the wine taste richer, the laughter ring louder because they are there.
Judith Viorst

In the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures. For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed.
Khalil Gibran

A day without laughter is a day wasted.
Charlie Chaplin

A sense of humor… is needed armor. Joy in one’s heart and some laughter on one’s lips is a sign that the person down deep has a pretty good grasp of life.
Hugh Sidey

You can turn painful situations around through laughter. If you can find humor in anything, even poverty, you can survive it.
Bill Cosby

Against the assault of laughter nothing can stand.
Mark Twain

Laughter and tears are both responses to frustration and exhaustion. I myself prefer to laugh, since there is less cleaning up to do afterward.
Kurt Vonnegut

The human race has one really effective weapon, and that is laughter.
Mark Twain

It is impossible for you to be angry and laugh at the same time. Anger and laughter are mutually exclusive and you have the power to choose either.
Wayne Dyer

There is little success where there is little laughter.
Andrew Carnegie

The most wasted of all days is one without laughter.
e. e. cummings

I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge. That myth is more potent than history. That dreams are more powerful than facts. That hope always triumphs over experience. That laughter is the only cure for grief. And I believe that love is stronger than death.
Robert Fulghum

Hearty laughter is a good way to jog internally without having to go outdoors.
Norman Cousins

Everybody laughs the same in every language because laughter is a universal connection.
Yakov Smirnoff

Just last night we came across an hilarious conversation between a woman who phoned into a radio talk show and the host of the show.  The woman who, otherwise sounds reasonably smart, somehow had come to the conclusion that the Deer Crossing signs in her area where placed there to tell the deer where to cross the road.  While we have often laughed with someone over some silly misunderstanding, and often laughed at ourselves over stupid mistakes, we would usually never deliberately laugh at another person.  But this is so funny and if you are in need of a good belly laugh today, this just might do the trick 🙂

No matter what is going on in your life, a little laughter will surely add love, joy and make your life so much more abundant!

What a good belly laugh!!!! But I can’t be too superior. Once when Drew and I were travelling through Northern Ontario after miles of nothing but trees, trees and more trees we were getting a bit “punchy”. We had been seeing signs with a picture of moose with one front paw raised. Each time we passed one I silently read the words. Only when I finally voiced my thoughts to Drew did I realize that I had been reading “Moose Danger” as “Moose Dancer”. You can probably image the look on Drew’s face when I commented that that would be something to see “a moose dancing”. I think we likely laughed the next 100 miles every time we got a mental picture of an ungainly very large ugly moose dancing in the middle of the highway.

That is hilarious Sheila:) You gave me a good laugh with that one. I think we laugh all the harder at these things because the truth is we’ve all had one of these “moments” ourselves….your’s is a good one…thank you for sharing it with us 🙂
