Happy Birthday, Sir Winston!

Winston-Churchill

Our gratitude continues into this week (and forever, for that matter) and, today being the day that Sir Winston Churchill was born, 141 years ago, we are celebrating his life and feeling immensely grateful for all that he did for the world.

This very amazing gentleman (though not always a “gentleman”!) has left behind him a well-known legacy.

Sir Winston was not someone who minced his words – he voiced his opinions, oftentimes going totally against what was socially acceptable and popularly thought.  One of his more famous quotes and one we continually chuckle at is when he was with Nancy Astor (Lady Astor) who said, “Winston, if I were your wife, I’d poison your tea.”  His retort was, “Nancy, if I were your husband, I’d drink it!”

He was convinced of what he knew and had a stick-to-it-tiveness that will never be forgotten.  He proved to be the brightest of stars leading us out of darkness during the Second World War.

Sir Winston had what he called “the black dog” – today it would be called “depression”.  He would go into a deep melancholy every now and again and would have to be alone.  He eventually found solace in painting.  Because of this, he was a difficult person to live with.  He did have a devoted wife, Clementine, or Lady Churchill as she was formally known, who stuck by him but took the occasional long journey (lasting months often) to get away.

Certainly, his pathway was not all that easy.  He did not do well in school as a child and had all sorts of emotional hurdles to get over but nonetheless, he achieved great things – great, great things – for the world.

We celebrate you, Sir Winston and are grateful for your stewardship.

There is a new book out called “Churchill’s Trial” by Larry Arn the president of Hillsdale College. I listened to an interview of the author and the book sounds fascinating.
