Color Your Own – Yes, Your Hair!

“Oh, I could never do that!”  We hear this all the time when we mention, “Why don’t you color your own hair?”

Well, your Two Chums do, and have done for years, color our own hair.  I remember when I first colored my own hair.  It was way back when I had highlights in my hair.  A dear friend of mine, Wendy, showed me how to do the highlights with the silver paper and so, off I was on a new adventure.  It was truly freeing as I no longer had to make appointments weeks in advance at the hairdresser, to say nothing of the amount of money I was saving!

Well, as the years went on and a lot of grey began appearing at the roots, I realized that my honeymoon of doing my own highlights was coming to an end as now, I had to color my hair first and THEN put the highlights into it!  I thought long and hard about doing all those processes when I asked a friend who had beautiful hair who did her color.  She sweetly said that she did it herself and asked if I would like her to come over to my house and show me how!   I jumped at the chance and have not looked back.

What she used was a Clairol product (shown here)

which you mix with peroxide (in a plastic bottle with a squeeze top).  You then shake it up and start to color!  You start around your face getting the roots nice and wet with color solution and then you part your hair in the middle and go all the way down that part, going right down to the back of your neck. You then part your hair on either side of that  middle part, and on either side of that part, etc. etc. until your whole head is done.  You then do two or three lines of color across your head in the back.  You leave this on for about 25 minutes and wash it off and, voila, your hair is colored!  It really is simple.

As we mentioned in the video here, the hardest part of all of this might be the choosing of the color.  When you go to a beauty supply store, there will be swatches showing you the different colors.  You can mix these colors if you need to (this is what we often do).  And remember, even if the color does not come out exactly the way you want it, you can try a new color a week later.

There is a wonderful company online at www.esalon.com .  This company will send you everything that you need to color your hair for about $25.  It will take you through a process of answering a series of questions on line and then ask you to attach a photo of yourself.  Your answers and your photo will them be given to a professional colorist who will mix a color just right for you.  Your customized “kit” will arrive at your doorstep in only a couple of days , ready for your use.

Then in only minutes you can go from this…
to this…

Could not be simpler.

You never have to go to the hairdresser again for color!  What a fabulous thought!

Yes you can!  Go for it!
