Cinco De Mayo – A Sweet And Spicy Celebration

DSCN1421
This is perfect for celebrating Cinco de Mayo.  It is so simple and so good, you’ll be “celebrating” all summer long! All over downtown Los Angeles in the garment, fabric, and flower districts you will find Mexican fruit vendors on nearly every corner selling this delicious and refreshing treat.

Basically this is fruit garnished with salt, chile peppers and lime juice.  If you want you can also add some finely chopped fresh mint.  It is sweet, salty, spicy and juicy all at once.  It’s almost impossible to pass this up because it is just sooo good!

Fruta con Salsa Con Polvo

Watermelon spears
Sliced mango (it is actually better if the mango is a bit firmer and not too ripe)
Cucumber spears
Jicama spears
(you can really use any fruit you enjoy, but papaya and melons of all kinds are especially good)
Limes
Salt
Tajin* (if you can’t find Tajin at your local market, you can use any kind of crushed chile peppers like ancho, chipotle, or cayenne but NOT chile powder because it also contains cumin and oregano)

Squeeze juice from fresh lime over fruit.  Sprinkle with salt and Tajin or chile peppers, you will have to gauge how much based on how hot the chiles are you are using.  Now prepare your taste buds to be wowed and delighted!

This is the perfect thing to serve this Cinco de Mayo 🙂

This brings back memories of a mango on a stick I had at Olvera Street. It was cut along the seed so it opened like a flower. Then, of course, sprinkled with lime and chile. Messy and delicious. This looks so much neater. Yum!
