Advent Calendars? Almost Time!

It is always such fun to put up the advent calendar and count down the days to Christmas! The idea of “counting down the days” until Christmas started with the German Lutherans who got right into the spirit of the season on the first day of December.  Some did this by lighting a candle each day, starting with the first day of December, some, by putting a religious picture on the wall for the twenty-four days leading up to Christmas or some simply by putting a chalk line on the door each of those twenty-four days.  Whatever way they did it, this became quite the tradition and because of this, in the early 1900’s the first paper “advent calendar” as we know it, was produced.

These days, of course, many of us enjoy this tradition and each morning go to the advent calendar to, first find the number for that day, and then open it to see what is behind it.

Most advent calendars are made from two pieces of card stock put together with twenty-four windows on the top side.  Behind each of those windows there could be a verse, a message of joy, a message of love, or perhaps a little piece of chocolate.  These can be readily found and bought.

Or, you can make your own advent calendar with felt by sewing small pockets onto a large piece of felt.  Into these pockets, each year, you would pop a small gift or a few pieces of candy.  If you have four children, for example, you could put four pieces of candy in each pocket.

Or, if you wanted to have an advent calendar that you could use year after year and did not want to make one, why not purchase a wooden advent calendar like the one below….surely a wonderful tradition to start!

Whatever way you and your family wish to start this wonderful season, go for it with joy!  There is so much to celebrate!

I have always been fascinated by Advent Calendars. I found a new type on the computer last year. Jacquie Lawson has a new one every year. Last year (still available) was London. Each day was a different landmark, such as the changing if the guard at Buckingham Palace, which continued after that day, ending in a very busy visual feast.

Jacquie Lawson has an Advent Calendar — it combines beautiful artwork with funny animations and great Christmassy music – a great way of enjoying the countdown to Christmas Day! It’s quite safe to install – no viruses or anything unpleasant!
