A Celebration of D-Day in Normandy

The Queen and Prince Philip, along with Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge took a trip across the English Channel to participate in D-Day celebrations in Normandy today.

The Queen has given a lot of her duties to the younger Royals lately, especially those trips which would take her away from England but this was something that she did not want to miss.

June 6, 2014 marks the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion in Normandy which was the beginning of the end of World War II.  Britain, the United States and Canada planned this invasion for a very long time.  The planning and staging of this invasion was top secret and it caught the Germans off guard.  Ships sailed from England to the coast of Normandy and off of these ships floating roads were dropped on the water on which army vehicles of all types rolled along to get ashore, surprise the enemy,  and start the invasion.

They kept going, all through France and ultimately into Germany letting it be known that they were not going to be denied.  It was, as we said, the beginning of the end of the war.  Obviously, there is much written on the subject.  Start here if you are interested to learn more.

If you have not had a chance to visit Normandy, it is well worth the trip.  It fills one with such respect for the people involved – such humility for all that they accomplished and gave up….many of them giving their lives.

No wonder the Queen wants to be present!  We salute you, great men and women for all that you did to end the Second World War.

The Queen will jet back from there in the evening so that she can be  just in time to attend the Derby at Epsom Downs Racecourse — an event that, like the D-Day commemoration, is something she would not voluntarily miss.  Horses are her passion and she loves a good horse race!
